Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician with strong pipefitting experience to support maintenance operations in a chemical manufacturing facility in Decatur, AL. This role is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and maintaining mechanical equipment, piping systems, valves, pumps, and related plant systems while following all site safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial piping systems, mechanical equipment, pumps, valves, flanges, fittings, and related components.
- Perform pipefitting work including measuring, cutting, threading, fitting, assembling, and testing piping systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, isometric drawings, piping layouts, work orders, and technical manuals.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on plant equipment to minimize downtime and improve reliability.
- Diagnose mechanical issues and complete repairs safely and efficiently.
- Support equipment installation, alignment, rebuilds, and mechanical improvement projects.
- Work with operations, maintenance, contractors, and supervision to communicate job status and maintenance needs.
- Document work performed, parts used, and equipment conditions according to plant procedures.
- Follow all safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space requirements, hot work procedures, and chemical facility protocols.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, chemical, refinery, or similar plant environment.
- Hands-on pipefitting experience, including layout, fabrication, installation, repair, and testing of piping systems.
- Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, bearings, seals, gearboxes, conveyors, hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating equipment.
- Ability to read blueprints, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and technical instructions.
- Experience using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring tools, pipe threaders, grinders, cutting tools, and related maintenance equipment.
- Working knowledge of industrial safety practices, including lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, and PPE requirements.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical failures and complete repairs with minimal supervision.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training, trade school, or journeyman-level experience preferred.
Preferred Skills
- Experience working in a chemical manufacturing or continuous process environment.
- Pipe welding, stainless steel piping, carbon steel piping, flange alignment, and gasket replacement experience.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and computerized maintenance management systems.
- Ability to assist with equipment startup, shutdown, inspections, and turnaround work.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb ladders, and work from elevated platforms as needed.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor plant environments, including exposure to noise, heat, chemicals, and industrial equipment.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, and respiratory protection when required.
Schedule and Compensation
This position pays $30.00–$31.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications. Candidates must be able to work scheduled shifts, overtime, weekends, call-outs, or shutdown/turnaround support as business needs require.
