Job Description: Outdoor Maintenance Worker (City Landscaping)
Location: Guntersville, Alabama
Position Summary
Performs routine outdoor maintenance and landscaping services that support the appearance, safety, and usability of public grounds and rights-of-way. Work includes mowing, trimming, planting, litter removal, basic irrigation tasks, and general upkeep of parks, streetscapes, municipal facilities, and other City properties. This position operates hand and power tools and works as part of a crew under the direction of a supervisor or crew leader.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
- Mow, edge, trim, and blow off grass areas in parks, medians, sidewalks, and facility grounds.
- Perform landscape maintenance including weeding, mulching, pruning, bed edging, leaf removal, and seasonal cleanup.
- Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf; assist with fertilization and approved herbicide/pesticide applications as directed.
- Pick up litter and debris; empty trash receptacles; assist with event setup/cleanup in parks and public spaces.
- Perform basic irrigation duties such as checking heads, clearing clogs, replacing minor components, and hand-watering as needed.
- Operate and maintain equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and small tractors/utility vehicles (as assigned and trained).
- Conduct pre-use inspections; perform routine maintenance (fueling, greasing, cleaning) and report equipment issues or safety concerns.
- Assist with minor repairs to park amenities (benches, signage, fencing) and general groundskeeping tasks.
- Place and remove traffic control devices/cones and work safely near roadways and the public.
- Follow all safety procedures, wear required PPE, and maintain a clean and professional work area.
- Complete work logs or simple records (equipment checks, daily assignments) as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support City maintenance operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- General knowledge of grounds maintenance, landscaping, and safe use of hand/power tools preferred.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work effectively as part of a crew.
- Ability to pass pre-employment screening
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of safe landscaping practices and basic equipment operation.
- Ability to recognize common hazards (traffic, heat stress, uneven terrain, tools) and work safely.
- Ability to perform basic math and measurements for materials and layout.
- Ability to communicate respectfully with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
- Dependability, punctuality, and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Physical & Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in heat, humidity, cold, rain, and other weather conditions.
- Frequent standing, walking on uneven terrain, bending, kneeling, and repetitive motions (trimming, raking, shoveling).
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs (with assistance as needed) and handle tools/equipment safely.
- May be exposed to noise, dust, pollen, vibration, insects, and chemicals (e.g., fuels, cleaners, and approved herbicides/pesticides) with appropriate PPE and training.
- May work near roadways, moving vehicles, and the public; must follow traffic control and safety procedures.
Work Schedule
Full-time schedule: Monday–Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Overtime may be required based on operational needs.
Compensation & Benefits
Starting Pay rate is $12.50/HR
